Qld: American tourist in critical condition with sting
An American tourist is in a critical condition in a north Queensland hospital afterbeing stung by an irukandji jellyfish.
A hospital spokeswoman says the 44-year-old was stung while swimming on the Great BarrierReef during a holiday at Port Douglas, north of Cairns.
He was airlifted to Townsville Hospital from Cairns on Saturday night after he wasclassified as a neurological emergency.
The American man is one of at least 20 people stung by irukandji or box jellyfish innorth Queensland over the Easter long weekend.
In Cairns alone, 11 people were hospitalised with stings, while others were stung atMission Beach, Cow Bay, and the Whitsundays.
Earlier this year, British tourist RICHARD JORDAN became the first person on recordto die from an irukandji sting after he was stung off Hamilton Island.
