NSW: Bravery medal for man who rescues child from floodwaters

(EMBARGOED UNTIL UNTIL 0001, MONDAY, 23 AUGUST, 1999)

The silhouette of a young girl and her cries for help made TIMOTHY HARRISON risk his own
life to rescue the child from raging floodwaters near the Hunter Valley.

His bravery last July has earned him a Commendation for Brave Conduct in today's annual
bravery awards.

Returning home with his wife in their cattle truck laden with 49 calves, they found that
the creek leading into their Singleton property had swelled with rising waters.

Almost having reached the other side, Mr HARRISON heard screaming and saw a Land Cruiser
being washed away. There was a man screaming, holding a little girl up.

Mr HARRISON, aged 61, sent his wife to a house 400 metres away to call for help, while he
found rope and fan belts and rescued the man and three-year-old girl from Blackman's Crossing.
