Fed: Howard warns MPs against preference deals

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD has warned his MPs and Senators against preference deals
with One Nation in the wake of the Northern Territory election.

Mr HOWARD has reinforced his position that the government should avoid any preference
arrangements with One Nation.

His comments stepped up the pressure on the West Australian Liberal Party to overturn
plans to allow federal election candidates to direct preferences to One Nation.

But outspoken WA Senator ROSS LIGHTFOOT has continued to defy Mr HOWARD's stand.

Mr HOWARD says the Country Liberal Party's disastrous result in the Northern Territory
was due to the "it's time factor" after 27 years in power, but the One Nation preferences
also had an impact.
